It’s hard to believe it’s now been 8 years since Nine Black Alps’ quite brilliant debut. It was fully deserving of its critical acclaim, overflowing with energy and angst, and channeled a new kind of grunge. Since then, the albums have remained very solid, and the sound has retained an edgy, fast-paced frenzy from its grungier nucleus.
All those years on, with the band still fresh-faced youths, a new Nine Black Alps track is always something to get excited about. Furthermore, the fact that they’re recording new material with the prospect of a 5th LP is something to positively salivate over. Fresh with a new label, Hatch Records, Novokaine is due to be released at the beginning of December. The blueprint is still as explicit as it’s always been: a full-blooded riff wars with a corruptive lick, and Sam Forrest’s vocals strain in despondency to leave the recipients of his message under no illusions. And, as always, the chorus snatches at a hook more than capable of suspending a thousand wrecking balls.
It’s refreshing to hear. Nine Black Alps have been one of the cult mainstays of British music for almost a decade, channeling a consistently exhilarating blueprint for British alternative rock. If Novokaine is anything to go by, the band’s appetite for making scintillating music, full of that feverish, unabashed energy, is as strong as it ever was.
